EGU General Assembly 2023

EGU General Assembly 2023

In April 2023, like every year, the EGU General Assembly 2023 brought together geoscientists from all over the world to one meeting covering all disciplines of the Earth, planetary, and space sciences. EGU provides an annual forum where scientists, especially early career researchers, can present their work and discuss their ideas with experts in all fields of geoscience.

The EGU23 General Assembly welcomed 18,831 attendees, of which 15,453 made their way to Vienna from 107 countries, while the rest joined online. It was a great success (as in past editions) with 16,357 presentations given in 938 sessions. The format combined traditional presentations with more interactive formats (like PICOs).

PRINTFLOODS was in Vienna too, with Dr Andrea Ficchì. Andrea presented his ongoing research on using Machine Learning to enhance Tropical Cyclone rainfall forecasts. He also helped co-organise a PICO session in the Hydrological Forecasting division. The session, “Reducing the impacts of natural hazards through forecast-based action: from early warning to early action”, was chaired by Dr Marc van den Homberg (Scientific lead at 510, an initiative of the Netherlands Red Cross) and took place on 28 April 2023. It included 15 presentations on impact-based forecasting, for multiple hazards including droughts, floods, tropical cyclones, and compound hazards.
